It’s often funded when your usual carers aren’t available, or for you to try new things.’

  • Duration: Typically covers up to 14 days at a time. Usually a total of 28 days in a 12 month period.
  • Purpose: Offers a chance to try new activities, make new friends, or develop new skills.
  • Support: Includes personal care, accommodation, meals, and activities.
  • Flexibility: Can be used in blocks of time or spread out over weekends
  • Experience: Experience independent living and community events

How is Short Term Accommodation (STA) and respite typically funded?

Here’s how it works:

  1. NDIS Funding: STA and respite are covered under the NDIS, which provides funding for support and accommodation for up to 14 days at a time. Usually a total of 28 days in a 12 month period.
  2. Core Budget: If you have funding in your Core budget, you can use it for STA and respite. This budget is flexible and can be allocated to various supports, including short-term accommodation.
  3. Standard Rates: The NDIS funds standard rates for STA, which include accommodation, personal care, meals, and activities.
  4. Group or Individual Support: Generally, funding is for group support unless there is evidence that you require individual support due to your disability.

What can you expect at STA?

When you stay at STA or respite, you can expect a supportive and engaging environment. Here are some key aspects:

  1. Personal Care: Assistance with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and medication management.
  2. Accommodation: Comfortable living arrangements, which might include shared living areas and private rooms.
  3. Meals: Nutritious meals provided throughout your stay.
  4. Activities: A variety of activities designed to be enjoyable and beneficial, such as social events, outings, and skill-building workshops.
  5. Support Staff: Trained professionals available to support your needs and ensure your safety and well-being.

STA and Respite, is designed to provide you with a space that feels like a home away from home. For some people, it is their first step to becoming more independent. It is a chance to stay with mates (away from mum and dad) and try new things in a safe and supported way.
