The next steps in educational success

Around Bayley In the Community

Learning is a lifelong journey that we all embark upon at different stages in our lives.

18 months ago, Carmelo, Alex, Emi, Bar, Daniel, Costa, Alisha and Lauren all prepared for their first class in Course Initial Adult Literacy and Numeracy (CIALN) at Holmesglen TAFE.

Supported by Bayley House instructors, Lisa and Susie, the new students thrived in this learning environment and thoroughly enjoyed life on campus – the café was a big hit.

Led by Holmesglen instructor – Heather, some of the skills the students developed were:

  • Literacy
  • Numeracy
  • Communication
  • Computer Skills
  • Creating Surveys
  • Teamwork
  • Working With A Partner
  • Research Skills
  • Spelling, Grammar
  • Social Skills
  • Memory Skills
  • Problem Solving

At the end of each session, the students would then rehearse and recap one thing they learnt during the day.

The skills developed as students within this course, has led to increased confidence. This was evident during the course graduation where each student gave a speech to a full lecture theatre. Parents, friends and another Holmesglen class were in attendance to witness this rite of passage. Everyone spoke clearly, confidently and what shone through was their clear love of learning and being part of group who were able to go on this learning journey together. The support for each other was very strong and this was evident during the speeches; Daniel supported Lauren, Alisha supported Carmelo and Alex supported Alisha as they proudly addressed the audience.

The graduation speeches were a culmination of the 18 months in the course. The class are now preparing to progress to the new course, which is the next level up, the C1IALN – Certificate 1 in Initial Adult Literacy and Numeracy, instructor Susie said ‘I look forward to seeing them developing more skills and becoming more confident.’

‘I love doing the course and I can’t wait to do the next one’ – Alex
