Bayley House Launches Garden to Plate Program to support healthy, independent choices

Around Bayley

Our Day Programs are excited to introduce a new Garden to Plate Program, designed to empower clients with essential skills in healthy eating, gardening, and cooking. This program was made possible as a result of a generous donation from the Gandel Foundation.

This hands on initiative will provide clients with the opportunity to plant, grow, and harvest fresh produce, gaining a deeper understanding of nutrition and sustainable food practices. By integrating gardening and cooking, the program aims to foster greater independence and wellbeing for all involved.

With the support of staff and volunteers, clients will create accessible garden beds to grow vegetables and herbs. They will learn how to plant, water, and maintain their gardens, gaining valuable skills in food production. Once harvested, the fresh produce will be used in a multicultural cooking program, where the budding chefs will learn to prepare nutritious meals. To extend their learning beyond Bayley House, a custom cookbook will be developed, enabling clients to practice their skills at home and further enhance their independence.

Beyond nutrition and practical skills, the Garden to Plate program also promotes social and emotional engagement. Clients will have the chance to connect with local community groups running similar initiatives, of which the aim is to create a sense of belonging and shared purpose. Through this experience, the group will develop a stronger understanding of healthy eating, gardening techniques, and essential cooking skills—helping them build confidence and independence in their daily lives.

By combining new found knowledge, hands-on experience, and community involvement, Bayley House is ensuring that clients receive well-rounded support for a healthier, more independent future. The Garden to Plate Program is more than just a learning opportunity—it’s a step toward lasting positive change, empowering individuals to take control of their nutrition, well-being, and overall quality of life.
